Granted the scene isn't perfect, it's to fast and brushes over a lot of stuff for the sake of drama, but I still think the game would be lesser without it. Both Haru and Futaba straight up say that they do not forgive him for his actions and probably never will, but given that through out the entire game the phantom thieves have been about getting criminals to confess, then of course they'd be upset about him becoming another corpse in the conspiracy. As for the phantom thieves forgiving him, that doesn't reslly happen. Both Akira and Akechi were fucked over by Shido but you don't see the phantom thieves trying to kill people to get back at him. It's asking you to think about what actually makes the phantom thieves just, and what makes Akechi unjust. It's the game asking you if using your circumstances to justify your actions really means anything. It's the fact that he's actually super mediocre at being a detective and tries to justify his actions with a tragic backstory just like all the members of the phantom thieves. Traitors are either as subtle as Adachi or as obvious as Patches, and the writers went with obvious this time because him being a traitor isn't the actual twist.

The big twist could be called from the moment you see him on the PS4 splash screen when the game loads up and I think the writers knew that. I dunno, I personally like Akechi because he's shit. He's a disappointment that could have, in my honest opinion, rivaled Adachi if he were given just some time to forge an actual relationship instead of an implied one. But out of all the things that need a little tweaking, Akechi deserves it way too much. I dunno if we're ever gonna get Persona 5 Crimson or Persona 5 Rogue or whatever you wanna call the updated re-release. Let us deepen the bond so that when the time comes to fight him, we're not fighting some Light Yagami/Adachi fusion with none of the charm and all of the shit.

Reveal the fact that he was an unloved orphan well before the day of his fucking death, show us hints of the tortured pain before he goes full crazy. They should have let us actually become his friend, give us an actual confidant story with him. His motivations and backstory didn't have a deep enough impact because I didn't care. All we got was a meme and some jokes, and that isn't enough to make someone care. Introduced as a party member way later than he should have, and no one had any time to form an actual bond with him. Look man, I feel like Akechi got a bit of the Haru treatment honestly. It was too much and made me feel like it was a shoe-horned in explanation for why Akechi was a shit. He's admitted to killing two of the Thieves' parents, several other innocent people, and we have to take all of that in along with his tragic backstory and connection to the big bad all at once. But nothing about the climax of his story gives me any satisfaction. Now, he had shitty motivations and a retarded plan, but he could have still been a good character.
