Like I've already said, they may have been tampered with by the original leakers years ago. In any case, I spent about 2 months collecting all these leaks and I've gone over all the archives to make sure that they're genuine.

Using other archivers to extract certain ZIPs (like that one) will sometimes not extract the full archive. It was a good thing I extracted and repacked all those archives, because file size is smaller, less waste of HDD space and bandwidth, plus some of the original leaks (NT 4) were corrupted archives, which I repaired using the *nix'zip' command and then extracted. This can be tested using the script I bundled in the torrent (compare_dirs.sh) in case anyone has doubts about the files being untouched. In general, these leaks are floating about in many different archives that still extract to identical directories.

They're all untouched by me, so any potential changes from OG Microsoft source code was there all along. In any case, while I have extracted files that were packed using other compression formats and then compressed them using 7zip, I have made absolutely no changes to the actual source files in this torrent. I managed to revive that old torrent to verify that we got the same file as was posted all those years ago.

#WINDOWS VISTA SOURCE CODE LEAK RAR#

I think it was shared because the dude (or gal) saw that we were trying to crack a RAR file (originating from 2007 or 2008) that supposedly contains Windows XP source code. Apparently the file had been passed around privately for years among hackers. The XP/W2k3 leak happened today (the 24th) on /g/ and other boards on 4chan. The uploader, using the name billgates3, writes: News of the leak was shared by Bleeping Computer where Lawrence Abrams rightly points out that it is very difficult to verify whether the code that has appeared online is genuine or not. There is also the possibility that, despite the fact the code is several years old, some of it could still be in use in Windows 10. Despite its age, Windows XP is still used by quite a number of people around the world, and the apparent ability to scour the operating system's source code for vulnerabilities could represent a security issue. While the Microsoft products featured in the leak are undeniably old, this could be something of a headache for the company.

  • Microsoft is forcing the new Edge on users with KB4576754 update for Windows 10.
  • Microsoft acknowledges that Windows 10 KB4568831 update is crashing Lenovo ThinkPads.
  • Microsoft releases Windows Terminal Preview 1.4 with important additions.
  • If an attacker is able to pull it off, all of your data is potentially at risk. So, even if RCE hasn't been actively confirmed, the fact that it's even a possibility in the present state of the game means that it's best avoided. This was a piece of ransomware that encrypted all files on victim's PCs, demanding a substantial payment through cryptocurrency. Wannacry was a pretty major example of a cyberattack enabled through RCE last year. Through this particularly nasty flavor of malware, an attacker can gain full control of your PC, and execute any code without your permission. Still, the risk of RCE in the first place is a pretty substantial threat. And further that "it is unlikely but not impossible that security flaws such as RCE (Remote Code Execution) exist".

In fact, in that Reddit thread we mentioned earlier, mod Demoman clarifies that the source code is "an old version and was initially leaked about a year or two ago". We have to reiterate that reports of Remote Code Execution in Team Fortress 2 and other Valve games have been unconfirmed. Until then, maybe it's time to check out one of the best PC games just to play it safe for now. We're going to be doing some further investigation on our end, as well, and will update as soon as we get any more information. But, because this is potentially a danger to your data security, our advice would be to avoid playing until the problem has been properly addressed by Valve. Until Valve comes out and makes a statement or updates the game in some way, this is unconfirmed. We are also hearing unconfirmed reports that all current multiplayer Source-based games may be affected, including Garry's Mod.

That post does state that "If you aren't playing on any multiplayer servers you are not at risk" – but it may be best to avoid the affected games entirely. The community has taken the lead with this issue, with a post on the TF2 subreddit warning users away from playing TF2 or CS:GO until the problem is patched out.
